What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

At Rehab and Heal, you will be offered one of the best Deep Tissue Massages in Bristol as part of my range of massage treatments.

Deep tissue massage involves applying intense, localised pressure to access the deep tissue layers and connective tissues. It can help to accelerate healing because it increases blood flow and reduces inflammation.

How do I perform this massage?

I will warm the fascia and superficial muscle fibres before, and then I will gradually increase the pressure on the contracted Tissue. You might feel discomfort, but it will be bearable. I will then finesse the way deep into muscle tissue with minimal discomfort. This massage doesn’t need to be painful.

The Deep Tissue technique I apply parallels the muscle fibres and consists of a firm and constant compression to affect the musculoskeletal system’s deeper structures, the skin, and the more superficial fascia and muscles. I will get to these deep layers using my fingers, knuckles, elbows, forearms and the heel of the hand. First, I will apply the pressure gradually to a tight area until I feel resistance. Then, I will be consistent with the pressure while the Tissue relaxes until the release is completed. This technique is precise, where I visualise a picture of the muscle being worked to precisely know the muscle fibres’ origin, insertion, and direction.

Unlike Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage requires a deeper and slower connection to the muscle tissue to free congestion of the muscular attachments to the skeleton. This technique will re-establish independent muscle action and realign posture and movement patterns.

For which conditions is Deep Tissue adequate?

  • Whiplash, stiff neck and repetitive strain
  • Postural problems
  • Sports Injury
  • Muscle tension or spasm in the glutes, hamstrings, quads and rhomboids
  • Recovery from falls
  • IT band
  • Sciatica
  • Low back and upper back pain
  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia pain
  • Relief of chronic pain

Can Deep Tissue Massage help with neck pain?

An injury, a muscular problem, a whiplash or a trapped nerve might be the root cause of neck pain, which the person can feel in the arm in severe cases. It is a common complaint, but you should seek medical advice if you feel numbness or lose strength in your arms.

Neck pain can be treated differently, and receiving deep Tissue is one of them. This technique is very effective at relieving muscle tension and stiffness.

If you suffer from a strained neck, here at Rehab and Heal, I can help you to relieve the pain.

How to prepare for the treatment

To prepare for a deep tissue massage, I recommend:

  • Drink plenty of water before your massage to help hydrate your muscles
  • Eat a light meal or snack before your massage to avoid feeling too full during the session.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol, caffeine or large meals before your massage.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Please communicate with your massage therapist about any areas of concern or pain you may have so that they can tailor the massage to your needs.

Benefits of this massage for Pre-event and post-event

Deep tissue massage can be beneficial in the days leading up to an event as it can help to:

  • Improve flexibility and range of motion by breaking down adhesions and knots in the muscles.
  • Increase blood flow and oxygen to the muscles, which can help them perform better during the event.
  • Reduce muscle tension and soreness, which can help to prevent injury during the event.
  • Relax the mind and reduce stress, improving overall mental and emotional well-being and helping you perform better during the event. It’s important to note that the best time to receive a deep tissue massage depends on the event you’re preparing for and how close it is. I can advise on the best timing based on your needs.

Deep tissue massage can be beneficial after an event to:

  • Help alleviate muscle soreness, stiffness, and pain that may occur after intense activity.
  • Assist in removing lactic acid and other metabolic waste products that can accumulate in the muscles during intense activity, which can cause soreness and stiffness.
  • Improve recovery time by promoting blood flow and oxygen to the muscles, which can help to reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process.
  • Help reduce muscle tension and spasms, which can occur due to overuse or injury.
  • Help to relax the mind and body, improving overall mental and physical well-being and promoting better sleep. It’s important to note that post-event massage should be done as soon as possible after the event to maximise the benefits. A therapist can advise you on the best timing for your needs.
