Swedish Massage

Find out Swedish Massage’s primary goal, how it is performed, and its benefits.

What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish Massage, also known as circulatory or relaxation Massage, is the most famous and widely practised type of therapeutic Massage.

This technique involves a wide range of strokes, from soft and long to kneading strokes and light, rhythmic tapping strokes on the topmost layers of muscles.

Studies have provided evidence that relaxation massage may bring benefits for many conditions, such as:

  • Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Immune system issues
  • Migraines and severe headaches
  • Blood pressure
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Joint mobility
  • Muscular tension
  • Mental health issues

You can read more about these studies here.

The main goal of Swedish Massage

The primary goal of this technique is the relaxation of the body and stress relief. However, there is a long list of benefits.
I will agree in advance and aim to meet your needs.
If you are suffering from tension and stress, I will work on the affected areas to reduce the tension there.

How is Swedish Massage performed?

I will mix techniques such as effleurage (long fluid), petrissage (kneading), friction and tapotement (percussion) strokes to sedate the nervous system and find a place of deep relaxation.
Using my fingers, hands, fists, forearms and elbows, I will vary your muscle receptors, and I will provide a mixture of feelings, which will affect the sensory receptors to sedate the nervous system and bring the body to a place just before falling asleep.
I will use different tools to vary what muscle receptors feel, enhancing relaxation.

The objective of this massage therapy is movements going one after the other, covering the back, glutes, legs, arms, hands, abdomen, face and feet.

How intense is the pressure of a stroke for an excellent Swedish massage?

The pressure I apply during the session varies depending on the client’s preference to get their alpha state of mind.

I will vary mine if you ask me to do so, as my main goal in performing this treatment is to bring relaxation to you.

The pressure will not be light or so deep, so it can keep you from relaxing.

The Swedish Massage can be deep but never as a Deep Tissue due to its goal of bringing relaxation.

What are the benefits of Swedish Massage?

Receiving this therapeutic Massage will help the body to heal itself because of the physical manipulation and stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
This therapy will help to eliminate toxins in the body and to get a high level of relaxation, which makes your body act as an open, receptive vessel in which healing can more rapidly occur.

  • Stress decrease
  • Back and neck pain relief
  • Relaxation
  • Improves sleep
  • Flexibility and range of motion improvement
  • Reduction of muscle spasms
  • Depression decrease

Can Swedish massage help to decrease stress?

When your muscles and connective tissues become stiff or rigid, it can cause pain and limit your movement. Massage therapy can help relieve this tension in your muscles and connective tissues. It also increases your blood flow and promotes relaxation.
If you have depression, massage therapy probably won’t cure your condition. But it may help relieve the physical symptoms associated with it. For example, Massage may help alleviate sluggishness, back pain, joint pain, and muscle aches. It can also help relieve fatigue and sleeping problems.
Swedish Massage won’t cure if you suffer from depression, but it will definitely help to relieve the physical symptoms associated with stress, anxiety and depression by alleviating muscle pain and aches, fatigue and inaction you may feel. In addition, Swedish Massage will for sure help getting better with your sleeping problems.
If you suffer from anxiety, relaxation may help to fight any evidence of it. While therapies are not an alternative to formal treatment, such as medication or psychotherapies, they will help to treat generalised anxiety disorder.
